OBJECTIVE OF DMR
Research Committee of Muhammad Teaching Hospital (MTH)
The Research Committee aims to develop, facilitate, and review research papers and proposals from MTH faculty.
- a) Objectives and Terms of Reference (TORs):
- Develop faculty expertise in conducting clinical, educational, and public health research.
- Organize seminars, workshops, and other research-related activities within the hospital to promote health research.
- Review hospital faculty research proposals and forward them to the IREB for final ethical approval.
- Facilitate faculty applications for research grants from the Research Advisory Board. This process involves committee review, followed by forwarding to the IREB, then to the Research Advisory Board. If deemed suitable, the Research Director forwards the proposal to the principal for final grant approval.
- Facilitate faculty participation in national and international conferences by assisting with grant applications to the Research Advisory Board and the principal.
- Facilitate securing grants from the Deanery, through the Research Advisory Board, for publication in high-impact journals.
- Foster research collaborations between clinical and basic science disciplines.
- b) Composition and Functioning:
- A Chairperson will lead the committee and comprise 4-6 members serving three-year terms, renewable by the Research director.
- The committee will meet at least monthly, ideally during the first week.
- A quorum of at least 50% of members is required for valid decisions regarding submissions for further processing.
- Meeting minutes, documenting ongoing and completed activities and timelines for upcoming activities, will be submitted to the Associate Dean of Research.
- The Chairperson’s office will serve as the committee’s secretariat.
The committee’s performance will be evaluated against the approved TORs (set by the Research Advisory Board) and through annual self-assessment by the Editorial Advisory Board.
Committees Established to Achieve Objectives
To effectively meet the above objectives, the following committees have been established:

Students Research Committee
Scope of Research Activities
The research activities covered under this policy include:
Credentialed specialists and staff of MCM as researchers.
Patients of MCM-affiliated hospitals as participants.
Students of Muhammad College of Medicine.
Use of facilities, equipment, and resources of MCM and affiliated hospitals.
Access to patient records and hospital data as required for approved research.
Training and engagement of faculty, scholars, and students in basic research, survey methodologies, and research ethics.
Encouraging faculty, scholars, and students to undertake research projects, particularly during clinical years.
Conducting workshops and training sessions on medical and scientific writing, including case reports, case series, review articles, and original research manuscripts.
Supporting faculty, scholars, and students in scientific writing and manuscript development.
Facilitating collaboration with undergraduate researchers at other institutions, both locally and internationally.
Supporting the publication of research work in local and international journals.
Research Advisory Board
Purpose
The Research Advisory Board (RAB) will serve as a guiding body to promote, enhance, and conduct research activities within the Muhammad College of Medicine, ensuring alignment with institutional goals.
Objectives
- Foster a culture of research among faculty, under and postgraduate students.
- Guide research projects, funding, and collaborations.
- Ensure ethical standards and compliance with regulatory requirements of the institute.
- Promote interdisciplinary and translational research in healthcare.
Composition
- Chair: Appointed by the principal.
- Secretary: Research Coordinator of Research
- Members (10-12): Appointed by the Chair, comprising:
Faculty representatives 2 each from 1)clinical , 2) basic sciences, 3)allied health departments, 4) External Experts: Researchers from other institutions
Roles and Responsibilities
To develop and periodically review the research vision, mission, and policies.
To organize workshops, training, and seminars for skill development. Recommend and facilitate internal and external funding opportunities for research.
Promote interdisciplinary and multi-institutional research collaborations
To evaluate and approve research proposals and to monitor the progress and outcomes of ongoing research projects.
To ensure compliance with institutional and national ethical standards in laison with the Institutional Review Board (IRB) or Ethics Committee.
To review the annual research reports and to evaluate research productivity (e.g., publications, grants, patents).
To encourage faculty and students to publish in peer-reviewed journals. Support participation in conferences, symposiums, and scientific forums.
Meeting Frequency
- The RAB will convene quarterly or as needed.
Reporting
- The RAB will report directly to the Academic Council and to the Principal.
- Submit annual research activity reports
Review of TORs
- The TORs will be reviewed annually to reflect evolving institutional and national research priorities.

Undergraduate Students' Research Committee
The Undergraduate Students’ Research Committee aims to develop, facilitate, and review research papers and proposals from MCM students. It also organizes research activities to enhance students’ research capacity.
- a) Functions:
- Conduct regular workshops, seminars, webinars, research fairs, and other research-related activities for undergraduate students to enhance their research capacity.
- Serve as a research resource for undergraduate students, assisting them with small research projects.
- Enhance students’ future career opportunities by assisting them in expanding their portfolios through publications in quality journals.
- Liaise with other medical colleges for student research activities.
- Assist in conducting health-related events (e.g., international days, skills development).
- b) Membership:
- The Research Director will nominate members.
- The committee will comprise 10-12 members headed by a Chairperson.
- The Chairperson will be a faculty member at or above the rank of Assistant Professor.
- A quorum of at least 50% of members is required for meetings.
- The student members serve two-year terms
- c) Meetings and TORs:
- The committee will meet twice monthly during the academic session.
- Meeting minutes, documenting ongoing and completed activities and timelines for upcoming activities, will be submitted to the Research director.
- The committee will prepare an end-of-year activity report for the Research director.
- The SRC’s performance will be evaluated against the approved TORs (set by the Research Advisory Board) and through annual self-assessment.
- Conflicts of interest must be reported to the Research director for assessment and resolution.
- Misconduct will be reported by the Chairperson to the Research director for disciplinary action.
- d) Organization and Roles:
- President:
- Presents guidelines for the committee’s future and sets monthly and yearly goals.
- Plans the activity calendar in coordination with the Chairperson and coordinates between the committee and faculty.
- Oversees the performance of the academic, activities, and media sections.
- Vice President:
- Consults with the President on committee operations.
- Arranges meetings with class representatives
- Fills in gaps in delegation as needed.
- Director Activities:
- Plans and organizes events (online and in-person) to cultivate interest in medical research among students.
- Coordinates with other institutions for events and activities.
- Provides a platform for students to present their research.
- Assistant Director Activities:
- Introduces inter-collegiate research activities.
- Assists the Director in daily operations.
- Director Academics:
- Acts as a liaison between students and the committee.
- Provides mentorship to the students.
- Raises awareness about the importance of research
- Coordinates with other departments for research activities.
- Assistant Director Academics:
- Assists and address student queries.
- Encourages student interest in research and equips them with skills.
- Director Media and Communications:
- Manages the SRC’s social media accounts.
- Creates editorial content.
- updated the SRC activities.
- Ensures social media coverage of SRC events.
- Coordinates with the IT department
- Director Coordination:
- Ensures efficient coordination and communication within the committee and with faculty.
- Assists and guides other members.
- Year Representatives (Years 1-5):
- Disseminate information to their respective year.
Representative of year-I MBBS
To disseminate the information and notifications of SRC in 1st Year.
Representative of year-2 MBBS
- To facilitate the second-year students in research
Representative of year-3 MBBS
- To gather feedback, concerns, and input from the students of the third year, and reporting it back to the Central Cabinet.
Representative of year-4 MBBS
- To provide a platform for fourth-year members where they can communicate their interests, concerns, and expectations related to research activities.
Representative of year-5 MBBS
- To provide a reliable communication channel between the members/students and the SRC.
Ethical Review Board (ERB)
The ERB is responsible for reviewing research proposals from MCM/MTH students and faculty, facilitating research activities, and enhancing research capacity among faculty and students.
- a) Objectives:
- Develop faculty expertise in reviewing and conducting clinical and educational research.
- Supervise research activities of undergraduate students.
- Foster a culture of developing research protocols.
- b) Roles:
- Review, and make decisions on the technical and ethical aspects of research proposals.
- Ensure the rights, dignity, safety, and protection of all research participants (human, animal, plant, and environmental).
- Monitor adherence to ethical standards throughout the research process.
- Ensure compliance with national and international research laws and regulations.
- c) Composition:
- Chair: Appointed by the Dean.
- Secretary: Appointed by the Chair, responsible for ERB operations.
- Members (8-12): Appointed by the Chair, comprising:
- Faculty members
- A statistician
- A nurse representative
- A lawyer
- A civil society representative
- d) Tenure:
- The Dean determines the tenure of the Chair, Secretary, and members.
- One-third of the members will be retained for the subsequent term.
- Absence from three consecutive meetings without a valid justification may result in replacement.
- e) Review and Approval of Research Proposals:
- Meeting Schedule: Meetings will be held monthly
- Submission: Proposals should be submitted to the Secretary or designated support staff.
- Quorum: A minimum of 50% of members must be present for a meeting to be valid.
- Approval Certificates: Certificates will be signed by both the Secretary and the Chair.
- Approval Threshold: Proposals require approval from 70% or more of the present members to be accepted.
- Review Outcomes: Proposals may be approved, returned for revisions, or rejected.
- Proposal Format: Proposals must adhere to the proforma approved by the academic council.
- Consent Forms: Informed consent forms must be submitted with the proposal.
- Prior Approval: Research activities cannot commence until formal ERB approval is granted.
- f) Functions of the Chair:
- Conduct meetings in accordance with established regulations.
- Facilitate training for new and continuing members.
- Assign responsibilities to committee members.
- g) Functions of the Secretary:
- Schedule meetings in consultation with the Chair.
- Receive and distribute proposals to members for review.
- Prepare proposal review documentation for meetings.
- Oversee the work of members and support staff.
- Prepare, sign, and distribute meeting minutes to members.
- Sign approval and rejection certificates.
- h) Other Provisions:
- Review Fee: A review fee of Rs. 1000/- will be charged for all proposals, except those submitted by undergraduate students.
- Secretariat: The office of the ERB Chair will serve as the ERB secretariat.
